Ground Cherries are also known as Husk Cherries and Cape Gooseberries.
Sweet, sunny little golden orbs, related to tomatillos but with tropical flavor any other fruit that grows in the North! Notes of pineapple and mango. Encased in their own compostable package, a dry, papery husk.
Superb for snacking out of hand, or add to salads and fruit salads, roast with root vegetables, mash them up to make a special cocktail or mocktail mixer, make jam, pie--- so many ways to use them! And they make an incredible, unique salsa akin to mango salsa but it's own thing.
If you have the patience to wait, they're amazing when dried like raisins for a month or longer. If you have a food dehydrator they could be dry in a few days.
Seed Savers Exchange suggests pulling the husks off but not detaching them, then and dipping the fruit in melted chocolate with the husk acting as the handle, then letting it harden and serving with dessert or a cheese board...
